Magpies praises illustrator’s ‘whimsical’ style’
‘It is fittingly apt that a book on the nature of love was initially published in French,’ says Magpies magazine of Davide Cali and Anna-Laura Cantone’s new picture book, What is this thing called love? The magazine’s review of our new book, published in its current July edition, singles out Anna-Laura Cantone’s illustrations for particular praise:
Cantone’s style is whimsical. Her mixed media is layered with richly textured colours and populated by cartoon-like characters. Employing a sense of playfulness, her illustrations ground these grand quandaries [‘What is this thing …?’] and also register the impossibility of ever finding an objective truth in questions like Ok, so what does it mean to be in love, then? … This story is for fans of the inventive Davide Cali and readers who will be charmed by its quirkiness.
Incidentally, if you read French, the original edition of the book was published earlier this year by Editions Sarbacane in Paris, one of our favourite European publishers.
